By Dave Graichen

A  Deville man has been arrested after a search of  his  home  found over  a  pound  of  methamphetamine.   The  Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office  believe 60-year-old Johnny Campbell was  possibly  supplying several local  dealers  in  addition  to  selling  small  quantities himself.   Campbell  is  charged  with possession of methamphetamine over 400 grams. The street value according to the sheriff’s department, $47k

After a full day of investigation, the Louisiana State Police has determined  a bomb scare at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette was a hoax. The  threat was called in to a local television station early yesterday  morning. State Police spokesperson Brooks David (DAH-veed) says  technicians examined the suspicious device and rendered it safe.  David says the device authorities found was packaged to look real. A  second suspicious object was found on campus, but they determined it had

nothing to do with the situation. He says the investigation is  definitely ongoing.  The UL-Lafayette campus is back to normal operations today.

BESE leaders offer a final compromise to settle the Common Core dispute.  Because of an impasse between Governor Jindal and Education Supt John  White, a standardized test is not in place for the upcoming school year.  BESE president Chas Roemer proposes the department of education issue a request for proposals for a new testing contract.  Roemer hopes the bidding process and approval of a contract can be  completed in 90 days. Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols says BESE is taking the  right approach. But she advises the education department to consider  input from the governor, before the bids go out.

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration says the Department of Education appears to have repeatedly sidestepped requirements of Louisiana procurement laws on testing contracts. The criticisms were levied in a letter sent Wednesday to Education Superintendent John White, in an ongoing dispute over testing aligned with the Common Core education standards. The allegations involve contracts that go back over 11 years, covering three superintendents, and that earlier were approved by the governor’s contractual review office. The Jindal administration started digging into the education department’s testing contracts after the governor sought to stop Louisiana’s use of the Common Core and its tests.

The head of the state Department of Veterans Affairs announced Wednesday, Long awaited veterans’ clinics in Lafayette and Lake Charles could receive federal authorization within the next couple weeks. Secretary David LaCerte, who is visiting Washington during a two-day trip, said he received assurances from members of the veterans affairs panels in the U.S. House and Senate that the Lafayette and Lake Charles clinics would stay in the legislation that is being worked over in conference committee. The finalized bill is expected to be on the president’s desk before the August recess.

A husband and wife are accused in a cross country bank robbery spree that  ended  with their arrests in West Carroll Parish.  34-year-old April Elizabeth  Johnson and 26-year-old Jonathan James Johnson were arrested by the West Carroll Parish Sheriff's Office.

Three  candidates  in  the  5th  District  Congressional  race  have reportedly  raised  over 100-thousand dollars, while incumbent Vance McAllister only has 48-hundred dollars in his campaign account.  ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says it's not surprising to see a slow start when it comes to fundraising for this race. The three candidates  that  raised  over  100-thousand  dollars  are Monroe  businessman Harris Brown, "Duck Dynasty" cousin Zach Dasher, and Richland  Parish  physician Dr. Ralph Abraham.  Stockley expects the  fundraising totals  to  pick  up  after  candidates  officially qualify for the race next month.

Louisiana State Police say a former police  officer  in  Oakdale  is under arrest for allegedly having sex with a juvenile while on duty. 25-year-old  Skylar Frank was fired from his job after being accused

of the allegation  in  May.  He  was  booked  Tuesday into the Allen Parish  jail for felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile  as  well  as malfeasance in office.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has seized, on  paper, nine large cats at the Yogie & Friends Exotic Cat Sanctuary in  the northwest Louisiana town of Frierson. The owner, Jenny Senier, has  been cited for having the animals without a permit. LDWF spokesman Bo  Behringer says the site also failed inspection.
