News for Friday 062218

By Dave Graichen

A U-S Supreme Court ruling issued Thursday gives states the authority to collect sales taxes on online purchases. Previously, Louisiana and other states couldn’t collect taxes on items bought from a warehouse or store that didn’t have a physical presence in their state. Global Tax Consultant Jason DeCuir says today’s ruling changes those rules.

DeCuir says Louisiana will collect more tax revenue, but it may take months and possibly legislation passed on the state level to get it done.

We were expecting a big day of votes on the House floor regarding sales tax bills that would generate hundreds of millions of dollars that could be used to soften proposed cuts to higher ed, TOPS and public safety programs. But the online sales tax ruling by the Supreme Court has postponed those votes.

The House yesterday failed to approve a proposal to renew a half cent of an expiring one cent sales tax as a way to generate revenue to avoid cuts to state services.  The measure received sixty votes, but it needs seventy in order to receive passage and head to the Senate.  The legislation can be brought up for reconsideration.  And it can be amended to lower the amount that is renewed.  But time is ticking as the special session is set to end Wednesday.

President Donald Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins in his re-election bid, a day after a report about Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani's connection to Higgins' opponent's campaign. The endorsement comes one day after a detailed report from Politico about the reaction among some Republicans who were surprised that vocal Trump surrogate Giuliani had endorsed a challenger, rather than the Republican incumbent.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported Thursday Louisiana’s personal income grew by 3.6 percent in the first quarter of this year, lagging behind the rate of growth in both the U.S. and Southeast region. The growth in Louisiana ranked 43rd in the U.S.  In all, the state added around $1.8 billion in earnings over the period.

Although average gas prices in Louisiana are lower this week than they were last, the current average is still forty-nine cents higher than this time last year.  AAA Fuel Analyst Don Redmond says soon those prices may be on the rise again.

The Mighty Lions of Lafayette High School are working out in their new weight room today, thanks to a generous donation by former NBA superstar Shaquille O’ Neal who helped fund the project that cost a little more than $40,000. O’Neal’s donation was part of South Louisiana Giving Day.

Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham calls the passage of the Farm Bill in the US House a great days for America’s farmers. Abraham, who is the only member of Louisiana’s delegation on the agriculture committee, says it help farmers recover from natural disasters. Abraham says the legislation heading to the Senate also requires able-body adults to either work or participate in a job training program for 20 hours per week in order remain eligible for food stamps.

LSU’s live mascot, Mike the Tiger, has gone viral after a video was posted of him slowly stalking several guests visiting his habitat. The guests had their backs to Mike which prompted him to approach the glass enclosure before pouncing against it. LSU Veterinary school spokesperson Ginger Guttner asks Mike’s visitors to not turn their backs to him. Guttner says even though Mike is still a playful juvenile, he is also a predatory animal and they are concerned Mike could break his teeth if he hits the glass to hard.
