The Heisman Trophy finalists are now official and Joe Burrow is one step closer to being only the second LSU player to accomplish the feat, the other being Billy Cannon, 60 years ago. USA Today LSU writer and Heisman voter Glenn Guilbeau says the win appears to be a lock for Burrow. The other finalists are Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields; Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts; and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. The trophy presentation takes place this Saturday in New York City.
We told you yesterday about a hit and run crash that claimed the lives of two Opelousas women and seriously injured one other Saturday night.. Authorities in St. Landry parish have arrested the driver to left the scene of the crash.. But, there is a very strange twist to the story. Detectives say 42-year old Kizzy Greene and 41-year old Angela Broussard were both killed when they run into the northbound lane of LA 749. Green had just received a call from an anonymous caller saying he son was dead. Detectives say the caller was accurate. The body of 18 year old Chance Greene was found later that evening on the side of road, a murder victim. An autopsy show he died of a single gunshot would.
The trail was set to begin this week for one of the three people charged in a negligence case that led to the death of 25-year-old Cyra Harrison. However, a motion for a sanity commission has put the trial of 57 year old Glen Maricle of Elizabeth on hold for now. On Friday, Maricle's public defenders, Phillip Robinson and Chris LaCour, filed a motion to have Maricle's sanity examined and also pushed for a delay because LaCour had just been added to the case. Prosecutor Brian Cespiva agreed to the continuance.
The Public Affairs Research Council is decrying what they say is an unconstitutional secret ballot nomination process for the Senate Presidency. The final vote for Senate President is public, but the crucial first step of nominating people for the position is not. PAR President Robert Travis Scott says the process is against the law. The Senate President is one of the most powerful positions at the Capitol, controlling appointments, chairmanships, procedures, and more. Scott says it’s too crucial a process for any secrecy.
Advocates say after the successful implementation of 2017’s criminal justice reform, the state needs to turn its attention next to its highest in the nation percentage of inmates in prison for life without parole. Promise of Justice Attorney Jamila Johnson says attempts to include changes to life without parole sentencing in 2017 were scrapped, leaving Louisiana as a major, international outlier. A Sentencing Project study showed Louisiana topped the nation in 2017 with 13 percent of it’s prison population being lifers without the chance of parole.
The US Department of Justice awards jurisdictions in the Western District of Louisiana a million dollars to help boost crime-fighting efforts in cities and parishes across the region. The City of Shreveport was the biggest recipient, bringing in 127,000 dollars, followed by the Rapides and Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Offices at 82,000 and 72,000 dollars respectively. On the downside, Louisiana was named the state with the most violent crime in the nation per capita according to FBI crime stats.
Impeachment proceedings continue In the House Judiciary Committee today. Following 7.5 hours of action, Judiciary Committee member and Benton Congressman Mike Johnson spoke during yesterday’s hearing saying they’ve been operating under haphazardly drawn special parameters for the hearings. Johnson says this is not the way to impeach an American President and that the American people see the proceedings as a sham.
The Coast Guard has suspended its search for the two people aboard an overdue helicopter that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico. Coast Guard says their crews searched over 4,117 square-nautical miles for approximately 68 hours but were unable to find the passengers. The search continued Monday morning for that helicopter that was reported overdue on Saturday. During that search, debris matching the helicopter's description was found.
Four LSU stars make first-team All-SEC as the Purple and Gold head into the College Football playoffs. QB Joe Burrow, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, receiver Ja’Marr Chase and freshman cornerback Derrick Stingley Jr all made first-team. Tiger Rag Magazine Assistant Editor Tyler Nunez says safety Jacoby Stevens was a shocking snub on the list despite his numerous weekly awards and consistently high level of play.
LSU's Ed Orgeron named AP SEC Coach of the Year. Orgeron's Tigers completed a perfect regular season in which the team snapped an eight-game losing streak to Alabama, then LSU beat Georgia 37-10 on Saturday to win the program's first SEC championship game since 2011. The Larose native will also receive a $25,000 bonus check for being named AP SEC Coach of the Year, which adds to the cash pile he's collecting in incentives this season, per his contract. Orgeron will also collect $500,000 for 12 regular season victories, plus $200,000 for winning the SEC championship.
If LSU wins the national championship, Orgeron's postseason incentives will max out at $1.2 million.
After losing to the 49ers Sunday the Saints will need some luck to win home-field for the NFC playoffs. Over the next three weeks, Green Bay must lose once and San Fran needs to lose twice or a lose to Seattle, plus the Saints need to win out. QB Drew Brees says they are a better-performing squad than what was put out on Sunday..
