Tonight is the second televised gubernatorial debate where candidates will try to sway voters as to why they should lead the state.  Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says tonight’s will provide clarity on what candidates will do to tackle many of the issues that will impact the state’s future, if elected. The debate airs tonight at 7 on Louisiana Public Broadcasting from UL Lafayette. 

 

SeatGeek says Sunday night’s Saints/Cowboys showdown is the hottest selling ticket of the week, and one of the five hottest-selling tickets of the year. Seatgeek Communications Manager Chris Leyden says the lowest ticket prices are hovering around 150 bucks a pop, but the average ticket is selling for significantly more.

 

House Republican Whip Steve Scalise says the transcript of President Trump’s call with Ukraine’s president proves no laws were broken. Scalise says the conversation was not about attacking political rivals, but it was a joint effort to clean up corruption in the country that was a home base for Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.

House Democrats disagree and say before the call was made, President Trump had frozen hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the country.

 

The Department of Health releases the state’s first opioid response plan, aiming to reduce the state’s opioid crisis. Assistant secretary of the Office of Behavioral Health Karen Stubbs says they’re aiming to enhance interventions and the capacity for treatment. Over 450 deaths were attributed to opioids in the state last year.

 

Lafayette General Health is set to merge with Ochsner Health System, with the combination becoming the largest healthcare provider in the Gulf South.  Lafayette General Health System President David L. Callecod says the merger means a big investment into the southwest Louisiana area.

 

Members of a Texas motorcycle gang are under arrest for allegedly stealing two ATM machines, resulting in over 150,000 dollars stolen in Westlake.  Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says two ATM’s were ripped out of the ground by the gang who stole a number of other vehicles to pull off the heists. So far five people have been arrested and the search is on for two others. The gang is known as the Brother East Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, or B*EAST.

 

DeRidder Police say they’ve had nine cases since last March where fake money used in movies was used as real currency. Chief Detective James Halbert says they are urging cashiers to take a hard look at the bills, before putting them in the cash register. Halbert says one person has been arrested as part of their investigation.

 

The felony trial of former Opelousas Mayor Reggie Tatum is set to begin today.

Tatum, who was indicted in 2017, faces multiple charges of theft, forgery and malfeasance related to a nearly $13,000 overtime payment he received after the August 2016 floods. He’s also accused of forging time sheets for some council members.

 

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has declared fishing disasters for seven states on three coasts. Ross' action makes people and businesses eligible for NOAA fisheries disaster assistance. Gov. John Bel Edwards said Ross' action could qualify Louisiana for millions of dollars in federal aid.

 

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports Police arrested eight people and seized 15 guns after receiving a call about people waving guns on a Baton Rouge street. The group had been filming a rap video. When police arrived, they saw people holding assault rifles and trying to walk away from police. Three of the weapons turned out to be stolen.

Fifteen people were initially detained and eight were later arrested.

 

Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office announced yesterday an arrest had been made in the 25-year-old unsolved homicide of Baby Jane Doe. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit along with the Jeanerette City Marshal's Office arrested 50-year-old Sonia S. Charles, of New Iberia, on a warrant for the death of the infant, which occurred in  January of 1994, when the baby, only days old was left inside a trash can and died of hypothermia. The case was recently reopened when new leads were developed. In the end, it was DNA that linked the woman to her infant.

 

Want a job at McDonald's? Just ask Alexa. Starting Wednesday, McDonald's Corp. will let job seekers start an application by using voice commands with Amazon's Alexa or Google's Assistant. If users say, "Alexa, help me get a job at McDonald's," Alexa will ask which country they want to work in and play McDonald's catchy "I'm lovin' it" jingle. After that, users can share their phone number and get a link to continue the application process. Alexa also shares some facts about working for the company, such as how it can lead to jobs in other fields. According to McDonald's, voice-initiated hiring is a way to stand out in a tight job market.

Good news for anglers. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will re-open the recreational red snapper season for the next two weekends. Based on LA Creel surveys, the estimate red snapper landings still has not reached the quota for the year, therefore the state can provide additional fishing days.

 

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron said he hopes that wide receiver Terrace Marshall will be able to return before the Alabama game in November. Marshall had surgery on Sunday to repair a stress fracture in his foot. Orgeron says senior Stephen Sullivan will move from tight end to wide receiver to make up for Marshall’s loss. Sullivan has seven catches for 99 yards this season.

 

The Saints are putting rookie linebacker Kaden Elliss on injured reserve. The 7th round draft pick out of Idaho suffered a knee injury in the win over Seattle. Elliss played on special teams and just started filling in for the injured Alex Anzalone. The Black and Gold are bringing back former first-round pick Stephone Anthony to take Elliss’ spot on the roster.
