The three major candidates for Governor will square off tonight at LSU for the first gubernatorial debate of the race. Republicans Congressman Abraham and Eddie Rispone hope to dent the governor’s incumbent armor and force a November run-off. A recent poll shows Rispone in third place at 16 percent, with Abraham at 24 percent, and Edwards at 47 percent. 14 percent remain undecided. It was a 10 sec video on snapchat that has many residents here in Cenla Upset. The Video posted Tuesday features a few Buckeye High School football players in the school’s locker room spewing racial slurs. Rapides Parish Superintendent Jeff Powell said they are investigating the video and discussing how they'll address it.

 

New Orleans Saints veteran quarterback Drew Brees underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb of his throwing hand Wednesday afternoon.  The surgery was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Steven Shin, the hand specialist Brees saw for his first consultation. Sean Payton said the Saints are optimistic, but declined to give a timetable for his return. Brees posted on Instagram that the surgery was successful and did his best to give a thumb's up in his selfie.

 

Lisa Rabalais found guilty for accessory after the fact to the 2015 disappearance and death of Ray Paul Lachney. Rabalais who was the last to take the stand in the trial,

repeatedly denied any involvement with Lachney’s death or disappearance

 

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise rallied with other three other congressmen and shooting survivors to push back against a Democratic effort in the House to pass gun control in the upcoming session. Scalise says Democrats are politicizing mass shooting tragedies and grandstanding with their recent gun control offerings and should adopt a different tactic instead. Scalise saying first and foremost, we should pray. Yesterday’s rally was put on by the Tea Party Patriots.

 

LSU leaders are urging students and faculty to seek help coping with the sudden deaths of three students who died in separate incidents less than a month since the fall semester started. President F. King Alexander said in a statement to students Wednesday that the recent deaths have shocked and saddened the campus community. They include two 18-year-olds who died this week, one in a skateboarding accident and another student whose death is still being investigated,  as well as the shooting death of an international student during a gas station robbery in Baton Rouge.

 

Clay Higgins is the first Republican from Louisiana’s House delegation to give an endorsement in the governor’s race. Higgins is backing fellow Congressman Ralph Abraham. U-L Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says the endorsement comes after Republican candidate Eddie Rispone attacked Abraham in a campaign ad. The Republican Party has previously request there be no interparty attack ads.

 

Moody’s Investors Service changes the state’s credit outlook from stable to positive, which could result in a rating upgrade in a year or two. Moody’s says that’s because there has been a significant improvement in the state’s financial position. The better the credit rating the lower the interest rate when the state has to borrow money for roadwork and construction projects.

 

Louisiana has the second-highest rate of women who were murdered by men in the country according to the Violence Policy Center. The study shows 67 percent of the victims were shot, and over 90 percent of the women knew their killers. VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand says most of the murderers were husbands, ex-husbands, or boyfriends. Alaska is at the top of the list.

 

According to the 2019 Lawsuit Climate Survey, Louisiana ranks second-worst in the nation in the eyes of business owners.  The study was released by the US Chamber Institute for Legal Reform and COO Harold Kim the environment is impacting insurance rates, adding the state needs to send a message to businesses that Louisiana is moving toward an environment not steered by trial lawyers.

Saints Coach Sean Payton says he will not name a starting quarterback for this Sunday’s afternoon game against the Seahawks in Seattle. That means we could get a heavy dose of both Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill. This week’s game will be followed by a Sunday night home game against the Cowboys.

 

ESPN.com’s Andrew Lopez reports that Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram and guard Lonzo Ball have been full participants in the team’s voluntary offseason workouts. Both players had significant injuries last season.

 

LSU has released its 2020 baseball schedule. The Tigers will open the season at home against Indiana on Valentine’s Day. LSU’s first road game will be February 19th in Thibodaux versus the Nicholls Colonels. SEC play begins March 13th at Ole Miss. The Tigers will host the defending national champion Vanderbilt Commodores during the first weekend of April.
